Catholic International University: Gala Film
A documentary-style film for the university's 43rd Annual Gala, carried entirely by the people in it.
The assignment
Catholic International University needed a film for its 43rd Annual Gala that would carry the mission to a room full of supporters. The direction from the start was documentary, not institutional: no recited history, no brochure narration. The university's story would be told by the people living it.
What we made
- A feature gala film of about four and a half minutes
- Interviews with three members of the university community: a graduate, a scholarship student, and a faculty voice
- Pre-interviews with every subject, and questions built from their own words
- Narration used only at the seams: an opening thesis, one bridge, and the close
- A silent animated logo and graphics package for the event
The result
The finished film is carried by the interviews from first frame to last. Its emotional center is a personal account of conversion and calling that no writer would have drafted and no actor could have improved. That result is method, not luck: the production created the conditions for people to say true things on camera, and then edited around what they actually said.
